Here is the essence of hands-on coopering in the new millenium. Throughout the 20th century, the Nadalié family has coopered barrels in Bordeaux. Most of the great vintages in France were aged in handcrafted Nadalié barrels. In the Nadalié house you will see the 4th generation - Christine, Stephane, Guillaume - upholding the tradition of their family in the creation of barrels.
"Hands on" in the Nadalié family starts with Jean-Jacques who studies and selects the trees in the forest. At auction time he can be seen in all of the major forests. The tree is bought standing, then felled and processed into staves which are then put to aging in the watchful care of Guillaume.
The new cooperage at Ludon attests to progressive thinking and foresight on the part of the Nadalié family. Stephane oversees production to provide maximum efficiency while preserving traditional methods. Christine, who holds the highest educational degree in winemaking, travels worldwide to ensure an ideal match between wine and oak.
(If you visit the cooperage, keep a watchful eye out for the 5th generation who are starting their cooperage education at the floor level.)
